Other creatures in Haalkitaine
Goblins
These small creatures live in the depths of Grey Mountains, to most people they are only a story that you scare children with, for people that are living in the mountains or traveling them frequently they are a true danger and something to be feared.
There are literary hundreds of thousands of goblins in the Grey Mountains at any moment, and usually they stay there and are quite happy about that, but once in a while they are united under a strong leader and begin to do raids down to human lands, the great goblin wars, now hundred of years passed, was one of those times, when great hordes of goblins swarmed the human lands and made traveling a hazard for decades.
The average goblin is very small by human standards, standing to about 4 feet in height, this is something the goblins know so they do not fight fair against humans… or against any others by the way. They are very clever when it comes to mechanical things of war and have made several dangerous weapons and siege machines. Most of these contraptions work less then perfect but they can be truly terrible when they do work. Otherwise goblins prefer to fight with small spears, daggers and axes in melee and almost all is trained in the use of the short bow.
In appearance they are small sinew figures, humanoid but have longer arms then normal for their height and too big heads. Their skin is a black-green-gray color and varies a little from each individual. They never have any body or facial hair except for their scalp hair which is always black and a little thicker then human hair, more like what a horse have.
Their predatory nature can be shown in their mouths, where they have fangs like other predators, they are usually larger in the lower jaw then in the upper, and is not as big as those of a Lugrôki. They have a small nose but a accurate sense of smell, they also have good hearing and really large pointed ears.
Their eyes are their weak spot, they do not se well at distance at all and are very sensitive to daylight, looking into the sun is actually dangerous for a goblin, that is why they choose to live underground. Their eyes work very well in total darkness though, as they lugrôki and some other dark races they can see body heat.
Demons
A major city houses it's share of secrets and strange people, that
is also a source of strange beings too.
Evil priests and cultists think it is great joy to summon terrible demons,
but in most cases (especially for cultists) they have not the means
to control the beasts, so there is always some chance that some might
escape, or even work for a powerful priest as an assassin or something
similar.
The catacombs of Haalkitaine hides many terrible secrets and it is
definitely not a safe place to travel, large enough to get lost for
years. Add this hazard to the fact that things are living down there
in the darkness… makes it very dangerous.
Another source of demons are the weather, storms of essence can force
portals between planes open, people can be dragged into these and creatures
from other worlds, for example the pales can come out of them… most
of the time these dangers are dealt with right away, plenty enough of
magicians in the city to do that job, but there is always some demons
that are to small to be noted, or intelligent enough to hide right away,
they are the real dangers
Rodents of unusual size
Living in the sewers are a lot of rats, since everything from food to dead people end up in the sewers it is a rat paradise even if it might be a little wet. From all the garbage that a city of this size produce the rats live to get pretty fat and large.
Once in a while at floods or if the food supplies these rats swarm the city, creating panic and chaos when thousands of them invade the streets and homes in search for food and shelter, from this invasions sometime plagues and diseases also spring.
Pets
In all major city there is a surplus of cats and dogs and some other pets, although Haalkitaine is more restricted on this then many other cities there are still a number of them, dogs are mostly privately owned and not so many are running loose except in some of the worse parts of the city.
Cats are not considered a problem since they help control the rat problems so they can be seen anywhere, most are just running free, but sometimes people have them as pets too.
Other animals are also common as pets, but poisonous or dangerous looking pets are not allowed in most places, among the nobles hunting falcons and dogs are the most common pets.
